Apple has finally entered the foldable-phone market.

After years of speculation about when the company would release a foldable iPhone, Apple officially unveiled the **iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026**. The device introduces a completely new design while keeping the familiar iPhone experience, combining a large foldable display with Apple’s latest A20 Pro chip, new AI capabilities and an upgraded camera system.

The iPhone Duo is one of Apple’s biggest hardware changes in years. Here’s everything you need to know about the company’s first foldable iPhone.

## Watch the iPhone Duo Reveal

Apple’s first foldable iPhone was officially unveiled during its September 9, 2026 event, giving viewers their first detailed look at the iPhone Duo’s design, displays, camera system and new software experience. The reveal also highlights how Apple has redesigned iOS around the foldable form factor and the larger inner screen. ## A New Foldable Design

The biggest change is obvious as soon as the iPhone Duo is opened.

The device features a **7.6-inch inner display** , giving users a much larger screen for watching videos, gaming, reading and multitasking. When folded, users get a **5.4-inch outer display** that keeps the phone compact enough for everyday use.

Apple says the Duo is the thinnest iPhone ever when opened. The company has also designed both displays with matching aspect ratios so content can transition smoothly between the folded and unfolded positions.

The hinge is another important part of the design. Apple says it has been engineered for durability and a smooth folding experience.

## A More Powerful iPhone

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new **A20 Pro chip** , the same processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro models.

Apple says the chip can deliver up to **35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro** when combined with the Duo’s new thermal-management system.

The A20 Pro includes a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine designed to handle demanding tasks, including gaming and on-device AI. Apple also says the chip uses a new 2-nanometer manufacturing process.

This means the Duo isn’t simply a larger-screen iPhone. Apple is positioning it as a high-performance device capable of handling serious multitasking.

## The Camera System Gets a Foldable Upgrade

Apple has also redesigned the camera experience around the foldable form factor.

The main camera is a **48MP Fusion camera** with optical-quality 2x telephoto capability, while the Ultra Wide camera also uses a 48MP Fusion sensor. The system supports features such as macro photography and improved low-light performance.

The foldable design also creates camera features that aren’t possible on a traditional iPhone.

For example, **Duo Preview** allows people being photographed to see a live preview on the outer display. Users can also take selfies using the rear cameras while viewing themselves on the external screen.

The phone supports **4K video recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision** on the main camera.

## iOS 27 Is Designed for the Foldable Screen

The iPhone Duo also introduces a different way of using iOS.

Apple has adapted **iOS 27** to take advantage of the larger inner display. The interface can change depending on whether the phone is folded, open or turned sideways.

One of the most useful additions is **Split View** , which allows users to run two apps side by side for the first time on iPhone.

That could make the Duo particularly useful for productivity. Someone could browse the web while taking notes, compare information in two Safari windows or keep a conversation open while working in another application.

Apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack have also been optimized for the foldable display.

## Apple Intelligence and the New Siri

Artificial intelligence is another major part of the iPhone Duo.

The device includes Apple’s latest **Apple Intelligence** features and a new version of Siri called **Siri AI** , which Apple says is designed to understand personal context and interact more naturally with users.

The A20 Pro’s Neural Engine is designed to support demanding on-device AI workloads, while Apple continues to emphasize privacy through on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute.

The new Siri is rolling out as a beta with iOS 27, with additional language support expected later.

## Battery Life

Battery life is particularly important on a foldable phone because the larger displays require more power.

Apple has placed a high-energy battery on each side of the device and designed the two batteries to work together.

According to Apple, the iPhone Duo can provide:

- Up to **31 hours of video playback** using the inner display

- Up to **44 hours** using the outer display

- Up to **24 hours of usage** when both displays are used equally

Apple also says the phone can charge to 50 percent in around 20 minutes using fast wired charging.

## Storage, Colours and Connectivity

The iPhone Duo comes in two colours: **Star White** and **Night Sky**.

Storage options range from **256GB to 2TB** , giving buyers considerably more storage flexibility than many standard smartphones.

The device is also **eSIM-only worldwide** , meaning it does not use a traditional physical SIM card. Apple says its eSIM system is supported by more than 500 carriers globally.

The Duo also supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Apple’s next-generation C2 cellular modem system.

## How Much Does the iPhone Duo Cost?

The iPhone Duo starts at **$1,999 in the United States** for the 256GB model.

Apple is offering 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB versions.

For buyers in the UK, Apple lists the starting price at **£1,999**.

That makes the Duo considerably more expensive than Apple’s standard iPhone models and places it firmly in the premium foldable-phone market.

## When Will the iPhone Duo Be Available?

The iPhone Duo will not go on sale immediately.

Apple says **pre-orders begin October 16, 2026** , with the first availability starting **October 23, 2026** in more than 70 countries and regions.

A further 28 countries and regions will receive the phone from October 30.

## Is the iPhone Duo Worth the Hype?

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is significant because the company is entering a market that has already been developed by manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei and other smartphone makers.

However, Apple is taking a different approach by combining its foldable hardware with a redesigned version of iOS, powerful on-device AI and new multitasking features.

The biggest question may ultimately be its price. At $1,999, the Duo is an expensive smartphone, and buyers will have to decide whether the larger display and foldable design justify the premium.

Still, Apple’s entry could have a major impact on the foldable-phone market.

The iPhone Duo isn’t simply another new iPhone. It represents Apple’s first attempt to redefine what an iPhone can look and feel like — and it could influence where smartphone design goes next.
