Formula 1 heads straight from the emotional farewell at Zandvoort to one of the most historic venues on the calendar: Monza.
The 2026 Italian Grand Prix will take place from September 4–6, with Monza hosting Round 13 of the championship.
But this year’s race has an especially interesting storyline.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli is heading to his home Grand Prix with a significant problem: he is set to take a grid penalty following a planned Mercedes engine change.
Antonelli Heads Home as Championship Leader
Antonelli arrives at Monza at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.

That makes Antonelli’s home race particularly important.
The Italian driver has already won six races this season, putting him firmly in contention for his first World Championship.
The Problem: A Grid Penalty
The biggest obstacle facing Antonelli at Monza will be his starting position.
Mercedes has confirmed that the championship leader will take a grid penalty because the team plans to fit a new power unit after exceeding the permitted allocation. The penalty is expected to be at least 10 places and could leave him starting near the back of the grid.
That is a major disadvantage—but Monza may actually be one of the better circuits for recovering from such a penalty.
Why Monza Could Give Antonelli a Chance
Monza is famous for its long straights and high-speed layout.
Cars spend around 80% of a lap at full throttle, while the circuit’s long start-finish straight provides opportunities for overtaking. The heavy braking zones into the chicanes also create some of the best passing opportunities on the calendar.
For Antonelli, that could be crucial.
Starting further down the grid does not necessarily mean his race is over. If Mercedes has the pace, he could potentially recover several positions during the race.
But the challenge will be enormous.
Ferrari’s Home Race
While Antonelli will receive much of the attention, Monza is traditionally a special weekend for Ferrari.
The Italian Grand Prix is Ferrari’s home event, meaning the famous Tifosi will fill the circuit hoping to see the Scuderia challenge for victory.
Ferrari also has an opportunity to take advantage of Antonelli’s penalty and potentially reduce the gap in the championship battle.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will therefore be two drivers worth watching closely.
What About Lando Norris?
Norris arrives at Monza with plenty of momentum.
The McLaren driver has won the last two Grands Prix, taking victories in Hungary and the Netherlands. His latest win moved him to 159 points, putting him fourth in the championship and back into the title conversation.
If McLaren continues its recent improvement, Norris could become another major threat to Antonelli’s championship lead.
A Crucial Race in the Title Fight
With the championship entering its second half, every point is becoming increasingly important.
Antonelli currently has a comfortable advantage, but a difficult result at Monza could allow his rivals to close the gap.
Meanwhile, Norris has momentum, Russell remains within striking distance, and Hamilton is still firmly involved in the championship fight.
That makes the Italian Grand Prix more than simply another race.
It could significantly reshape the championship battle.
