Casely has reissued a recall for its Power Pod wireless power bank following serious safety incidents, according to reporting from The Verge.
The recall comes after two major events involving the affected devices:
-
One unit was linked to a fire incident that resulted in the death of a 75-year-old woman
-
Another unit reportedly overheated and exploded on a commercial airplane
The Power Pod is a magnetic wireless charging power bank designed to attach to smartphones for portable charging. Casely originally issued a recall earlier, but has now expanded and reissued it after the new incidents raised renewed safety concerns.
The devices are being recalled due to a risk of overheating and potential fire hazard, which can occur during normal use or charging. Customers who own the affected units are being advised to stop using them immediately and follow the company’s recall instructions for replacement or refund options.
The situation has drawn attention because of the severity of the outcomes, especially the fatal incident, and highlights ongoing concerns around lithium-ion battery safety in compact portable chargers.
Casely has expanded and reissued its recall of the Power Pod MagSafe wireless power banks after additional incidents and serious injuries, according to updated information reported alongside the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
What happened
The recall was first issued in April 2025 due to a known risk that the battery packs could overheat, expand, ignite, or explode, posing fire and burn hazards.
At that time:
-
51 incident reports had already been filed
-
6 minor burn injuries were confirmed
New incidents since the initial recall
Casely has since received 28 additional reports, including two major incidents:
-
August 2024 (New Jersey):
A woman was charging her phone with the power bank on her lap when it ignited and exploded. She suffered second- and third-degree burns and later died from complications. -
February 2026 (airplane incident):
A 47-year-old passenger experienced a fire and explosion while charging a phone in-flight, resulting in first-degree burns. The event has added to airline restrictions on power banks.
