After years of waiting, Rockstar Games has finally shown Grand Theft Auto VI in extended gameplay footage.
Premiering first on Netflix on August 27, the presentation runs for roughly half an hour and is made entirely from in-game footage captured on PlayStation 5. It gives fans their clearest look yet at how GTA VI will actually play, rather than simply showing cinematic trailers. Watch the premiere via GTA VI Premiere
With the release of GTA VI still scheduled for November 19, 2026, here are the biggest things the Extended Look actually showed.
1. The Gameplay Starts With Jason and Lucia in Trouble
The presentation opens with Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos involved in a drug deal that goes wrong.
The situation quickly escalates, leading to a police confrontation and a firefight. It immediately gives viewers a much better sense of how combat, movement and the interaction between the two protagonists can work during an actual mission.
This is one of the biggest differences between the Extended Look and Rockstar’s previous trailers: we’re finally seeing extended sequences of gameplay rather than short cinematic cuts.
2. Jason and Lucia’s Partnership Is Central
The Extended Look spends considerable time showing Jason and Lucia together.
Players see them moving around apartments, driving through Leonida and getting involved in criminal activities. The footage reinforces Rockstar’s description of the pair as two protagonists who are forced to rely on each other after an easy score goes wrong.
Their relationship appears to be much more than a simple two-character setup. Much of the gameplay is built around how Jason and Lucia operate together.
3. Character Switching Returns
The presentation also provides a clearer look at switching between Jason and Lucia.
The footage shows the two protagonists being used in different situations, including sequences where they are separated and sequences where they work together.
The system should feel familiar to players who enjoyed GTA V’s character switching, but GTA VI appears to place even greater emphasis on the relationship between its two leads.
4. Leonida Looks Huge and Detailed
One of the most striking parts of the Extended Look is the world itself.
The footage moves through Vice City and other parts of Leonida, showing busy roads, buildings, beaches and a variety of environments.
Rockstar’s official description places the story across the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City at its centre.
The presentation also gives a much better impression of how the world behaves outside of missions, with Jason and Lucia encountering events and activities while simply moving around the city.
5. Police Chases Look More Dynamic
Police encounters are another major part of the footage.
The Extended Look shows Jason and Lucia involved in high-speed pursuits and shootouts, giving viewers a much better look at how police encounters can unfold during gameplay.
The presentation also shows combat from moving vehicles, adding another layer to GTA’s familiar police-chase formula.
6. There Is Plenty to Do Outside Missions
Rockstar also used the presentation to show activities beyond the main storyline.
The footage includes activities such as swimming, basketball, diving, parachuting and other recreational or open-world activities.
That supports the idea that Leonida isn’t simply a backdrop for missions. Players will have plenty of reasons to explore the world when they’re not progressing the story.
7. Rockstar Is Bringing Back Familiar GTA Features
The Extended Look also highlights some familiar elements from previous games.
Snapmatic, GTA’s in-game social media platform, returns. The presentation also shows the return of the classic six-star wanted system.
At the same time, Rockstar appears to have expanded some of the systems surrounding police encounters and vehicle theft. For example, players may need to think more carefully about disguising themselves and how they steal certain vehicles.
8. The Visual Detail Is a Major Step Forward
Perhaps the most obvious takeaway is simply how detailed the game looks.
Because the presentation is made from actual in-game footage, viewers get a much better sense of the environments, character animations, vehicles and lighting that Rockstar has built for GTA VI.
The footage was captured on a base PlayStation 5, according to reporting on the presentation, making the visual quality particularly notable.
This Is the First Real Look at GTA VI Gameplay
For years, fans have had to rely on trailers, screenshots and scattered information to imagine how GTA VI would actually feel to play.
The Extended Look finally changes that.
We now have extended footage of combat, driving, exploration, police chases, character switching and activities across Leonida.
More importantly, these aren’t leaked clips or unofficial footage. This is Rockstar presenting the game on its own terms.
When Does GTA VI Release?
Despite the new footage, GTA VI is still several months away.
Rockstar’s official website lists the release date as November 19, 2026, with the game coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Extended Look may have given fans their biggest glimpse yet, but there is still plenty Rockstar hasn’t shown.
For now, however, one thing is clear:
GTA VI is no longer just a game fans are imagining from trailers. We have finally seen it in action.
