# Apple iPad Keyboard Comparison Guide (2025)

Apple now offers three distinct keyboard accessories across the iPad lineup, each aimed at a different type of user and workflow. While the naming is straightforward, the actual experience between them varies quite a bit in terms of portability, typing comfort, materials, lap usability, trackpad quality, and overall “laptop replacement” capability.

The current lineup includes:

- Magic Keyboard Folio

- Magic Keyboard for iPad Air

- Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro

Unlike earlier years where the same keyboard worked across multiple iPads, Apple has now differentiated the accessories more aggressively. That means choosing the right keyboard is almost as important as choosing the iPad itself.

The Magic Keyboard Folio is Apple’s most flexible iPad keyboard. Unlike the other Magic Keyboards, it separates into two pieces:

1. the keyboard,

2. and the magnetic rear kickstand.

This allows the iPad to stand independently without the keyboard attached, which is especially useful for:

- drawing,

- watching videos,

- gaming,

- presentations,

- or classroom environments.

## Strengths

### Excellent Desk Experience

The adjustable kickstand works extremely well on tables and desks. You can position the iPad at many viewing angles.

### Lightweight

At only 381 grams, it is much lighter than the laptop-style Magic Keyboards.

### Flexible Usage

You can:

- remove the keyboard entirely,

- keep only the stand attached,

- or use both together.

That flexibility is something the more expensive keyboards do not offer.

### Function Row Included

Apple added:

- brightness controls,

- media controls,

- volume,

- search,

- and multitasking shortcuts.

This greatly improves usability compared to older Magic Keyboards.

## Weaknesses

### Poor Lap Use

The separate kickstand makes it awkward on couches, beds, airplanes, or your lap.

### No Backlighting

Using it in darker rooms can be frustrating.

### Less Premium Feel

The materials are functional rather than luxurious.

The newer Magic Keyboard for iPad Air bridges the gap between the budget Folio and the premium Pro keyboard.

It adopts the floating cantilever design originally introduced with the iPad Pro Magic Keyboard.

## Major Improvements

### Better Lap Usability

The rigid hinge and floating structure make it dramatically better for:

- airplane trays,

- couches,

- coffee shops,

- and general mobile use.

### Larger Trackpad

The trackpad is much larger than the Folio version, making multitasking and cursor navigation more comfortable.

### Function Row

Apple finally added a dedicated function row here as well.

### Pass-through Charging

The USB-C port in the hinge allows charging without using the iPad’s main port.

* * *

## Downsides

### No Backlighting

This is one of the biggest compromises.

Oddly, older high-end Magic Keyboards had backlighting, but the new Air keyboard removes it.

### Still Uses Silicone Exterior

It feels less premium than the aluminum Pro version.

### Physical Click Only

Unlike the Pro version, it lacks haptic trackpad feedback.

This is Apple’s highest-end iPad keyboard and the closest experience to using a MacBook.

Apple redesigned it heavily for the M4 iPad Pro generation.

* * *

# Major Advantages

## Aluminum Palm Rest

The aluminum top case dramatically improves:

- rigidity,

- premium feel,

- durability,

- and typing comfort.

It feels much closer to a MacBook than earlier iPad keyboards.

* * *

## Haptic Trackpad

The haptic trackpad is arguably the biggest upgrade.

Instead of a traditional physical click, it simulates clicks electronically, similar to modern MacBooks.

Benefits include:

- more uniform clicking,

- customizable click feel,

- quieter operation,

- better responsiveness.

* * *

## Backlit Keyboard

The Pro keyboard remains the only Apple iPad keyboard with backlit keys.

This matters more than people expect for:

- late-night work,

- flights,

- classrooms,

- dark offices.

* * *

## Better Build Quality

Everything about the Pro keyboard feels more refined:

- hinge tension,

- typing stability,

- materials,

- trackpad responsiveness,

- overall rigidity.
