Keyboard Upgrade Expected in iOS 27, According to Rumors

Apple has reportedly been testing an updated iPhone keyboard with improved autocorrect features, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Apple is reportedly testing a major upgrade to the iPhone keyboard, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, that goes beyond traditional autocorrect.

The updated system is said to “expand autocorrect by offering alternative words,” functioning more like writing-assist tools such as Grammarly. Instead of only correcting typos or obvious mistakes, the keyboard would suggest alternative phrasing and word choices in real time, giving users multiple options for how a sentence could be written.

Gurman noted in a follow-up post that the feature would not just fix words but actively propose substitutions—an evolution of autocorrect into a more intelligent writing assistant. While not confirmed, this kind of system could potentially be powered by Apple Intelligence, Apple’s growing set of on-device AI capabilities.

The keyboard improvements were mentioned briefly in a broader report about future iOS development, including how Siri may become capable of handling multiple requests within a single command in iOS 27.

Apple has not officially announced the feature, so details remain limited for now, and it is unclear when—or if—it will ship publicly.

Apple has not yet made a final decision on whether to release its updated iPhone keyboard, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. However, if the feature does move forward, it is expected to arrive as part of iOS 27.

The rumored keyboard upgrade would build on Apple’s existing autocorrect system by suggesting alternative word choices, making it more like an AI-assisted writing tool rather than a simple typo correction system. Gurman notes that the first developer beta of iOS 27 is expected in June, with a public release likely in September.

In the meantime, Apple has already made smaller improvements to typing accuracy. The recently released iOS 26.4 includes enhancements aimed at improving keyboard accuracy when typing quickly, based on Apple’s official release notes.

If Apple does proceed with the redesigned keyboard, it would represent a gradual shift toward more AI-driven text input features across iOS.
