Formula 1 cars have changed dramatically since the first World Championship race in 1950.

The Lotus 79 is one of the most important cars in F1 history.

Introduced in 1978, it made effective use of ground-effect aerodynamics, generating enormous amounts of downforce while allowing the car to remain relatively efficient through corners.

Mario Andretti drove the Lotus 79 to the 1978 Drivers’ Championship, while Lotus also won the Constructors’ Championship.

McLaren MP4/4: A Dominant Machine

Few F1 cars have a record quite like the McLaren MP4/4.

Driven by Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost in 1988, the car won 15 of the season’s 16 Grands Prix. Senna took the Drivers’ Championship, while McLaren dominated the Constructors’ standings.

Ferrari F2004: Schumacher’s Masterpiece

The Ferrari F2004 became the final chapter of one of the most dominant periods in Ferrari’s history.

Michael Schumacher won 13 of 18 races in 2004, securing his seventh and final World Championship. Ferrari also won the Constructors’ Championship for a sixth consecutive season.

The F2004’s combination of speed, reliability and aerodynamic efficiency made it one of the defining cars of the early-2000s era.

Brawn BGP 001: The Fairytale Car

The Brawn BGP 001 has one of the most unusual stories in F1.

The car was developed from the Honda project that was abandoned at the end of 2008. Ross Brawn’s new team took over the operation and entered the 2009 season with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

The result was extraordinary.

Brawn GP won six of the first seven races, with Button eventually securing the Drivers’ Championship and the team winning the Constructors’ Championship in its only season under the Brawn name. Its innovative double diffuser played an important role in its success.

Red Bull RB9: Vettel’s Perfect Run

The Red Bull RB9 powered Sebastian Vettel to his fourth consecutive Drivers’ Championship in 2013.

Vettel won 13 races, including an incredible nine consecutive victories toward the end of the season. Red Bull also claimed the Constructors’ Championship.

The RB9 represented the peak of Red Bull’s first dominant era and one of Adrian Newey’s most successful designs.

Mercedes W07: The Hybrid Era

The Mercedes W07 belongs to another dominant period in F1.

Mercedes had already established itself as the team to beat during the early hybrid era, and the W07 continued that success in 2016.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg won all but two races that season, while Mercedes comfortably secured another Constructors’ Championship.

It was another example of how a team can dominate when its car, engine and aerodynamic package work together perfectly.

The 2026 F1 Cars: A New Era

The latest generation of F1 cars represents another major change.

For 2026, Formula 1 introduced a completely revised technical package. The cars became shorter, narrower and lighter, while new aerodynamic concepts and more powerful electrical systems changed how the cars generate and manage performance.

The 2026 power units still use a 1.6-litre V6 turbo-hybrid engine, but the electrical contribution has increased significantly, creating roughly a 50/50 split between combustion and electric power. The cars also feature active aerodynamics, allowing sections of the front and rear wings to change configuration depending on the conditions.

In other words, the latest F1 cars are not simply faster versions of their predecessors—they represent a new design philosophy.

What Makes an F1 Car Great?

A legendary F1 car isn’t necessarily the one with the highest top speed.

The greatest machines usually combine:
