Airports are often described as some of the largest transportation facilities on Earth, but “biggest” can mean different things.
An airport can be the largest by land area, busiest by passenger traffic, or among the largest by terminal size. In this article, the focus is physical land area—the amount of land occupied by the airport.
Using that measurement, some airports are surprisingly enormous.
1. King Fahd International Airport — Saudi Arabia
King Fahd International Airport, located near Dammam, Saudi Arabia, is widely recognized as the world’s largest airport by land area.
Its enormous site covers approximately 776 square kilometres (300 square miles)—an area larger than many cities.
Despite its enormous footprint, only part of the total land is occupied by passenger facilities and active airport infrastructure.
Its size is therefore a reminder that the largest airport isn’t necessarily the busiest airport.
2. Denver International Airport — United States
Denver International Airport is the second-largest airport in the world by land area, covering approximately 135.7 square kilometres (52.4 square miles).
Located in Colorado, Denver’s huge site gives the airport plenty of room for runways, terminals and future development.
It is also one of the world’s busiest airports. In 2025, Denver handled more than 82.4 million passengers, placing it tenth globally for total passenger traffic according to Airports Council International.
That makes Denver particularly interesting because it combines enormous physical size with heavy passenger traffic.
3. Beijing Daxing International Airport — China
Beijing Daxing International Airport is one of the most recognizable modern airports in the world.
Its airport site covers roughly 47 square kilometres, putting it among the world’s largest by land area.
The airport is famous for its futuristic terminal, designed around a distinctive radial layout. The design allows passengers to reach the gates without travelling excessively long distances through the enormous building.
Beijing Daxing is also an important example of how modern airports are being designed to handle enormous numbers of passengers while incorporating advanced architecture and technology.
4. Cairo International Airport — Egypt
Cairo International Airport occupies approximately 36–37 square kilometres, making it one of the world’s largest airport sites.
It serves as one of Egypt’s principal aviation gateways and plays an important role in connecting Cairo with destinations across Africa, the Middle East, Europe and beyond.
Its location also makes it particularly significant for international tourism, as Cairo is one of the major entry points for travelers visiting Egypt’s historic attractions.
5. Shanghai Pudong International Airport — China
Shanghai Pudong International Airport covers approximately 40 square kilometres, depending on how the airport’s boundaries are measured.
Located on the eastern side of Shanghai, Pudong is one of China’s major international aviation hubs.
Its importance isn’t simply about its physical size. In 2025, Pudong handled almost 85 million passengers, placing it fifth worldwide in total passenger traffic.
That makes Pudong another excellent example of an airport that is both large in area and extremely busy.
6. Suvarnabhumi Airport — Thailand
Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport covers approximately 32.4 square kilometres.
The airport is Thailand’s principal international gateway and serves millions of travelers entering and leaving the country every year.
Its location makes it particularly important for tourism, connecting Bangkok with destinations throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East and other parts of the world.
Why Are Some Airports So Huge?
There are several reasons why an airport might occupy such a large area.
Airports need far more than just terminals, as their land can include runways, taxiways, aircraft parking areas, cargo facilities, maintenance zones, roads and transportation infrastructure, safety areas, future development zones, as well as undeveloped or protected land.
This is why looking only at the size of a terminal can give a very different impression of an airport’s overall scale.
