Bluepoint Dev Suggests Steam Machine Partly to Blame for PlayStation’s Reported PC Retreat, and Ironic if “Valve Ultimately Ended Up Winning the Console War

Peter Dalton from Bluepoint Games highlighted an interesting angle on why Sony might be pulling back from PC ports: it may not be purely about Xbox competition. Instead, he points to the rise of a Steam-based console ecosystem as a potential disruptor.

Dalton suggests that if Valve releases a Steam console that delivers console-like simplicity while still granting access to the entire PC game library, it could offer the “best of all worlds”—the ease of a console with the breadth and power of PC gaming. In that scenario, releasing PlayStation games on PC could inadvertently strengthen Valve’s ecosystem, giving players an appealing alternative. He even notes the irony: after decades of traditional console competition, Valve could end up dominating the console space if the Steam Machine resonates with gamers.

Essentially, the Steam console could blur the line between PC and console, creating a platform that’s both convenient and powerful, and this may explain some of Sony’s recent strategic decisions.
