“Can you see Cuba from Key West?” is one of the first questions many American tourists ask when they arrive in Key West—the southernmost point of the United States.
It might sound a bit odd to international travelers, especially those who have already visited Cuba and don’t think twice about it. But for many Americans, Cuba holds a certain mystique—shaped by its proximity, its history, and years of restricted travel that have made it feel both close and out of reach.

Here’s a cleaner, more engaging rewrite with better tone and flow:
Like many things people can’t easily access, Cuba has developed a certain fascination among American travelers. Since visiting isn’t always straightforward, many hope they can at least see it. And what better place to try than the closest point on U.S. soil—Key West?
Unfortunately, it’s not the answer most people want to hear.
Can You See Cuba From Key West?
The short answer is no—you cannot see Cuba from Key West.
Even though Cuba is only about 90 miles away, the Earth’s curvature gets in the way. Because the planet is round, Cuba sits below the horizon when viewed from Key West. This means that no matter how clear the day is—or how powerful your binoculars or telescope might be—you won’t be able to spot Havana from here.
That hasn’t stopped some creative hotel and bar owners from claiming their views are perfect for “seeing Cuba,” but it’s more of a fun marketing idea than reality.
One of the most iconic spots in Key West is the Southernmost Point Buoy. This colorful landmark marks the southernmost point in the continental United States and proudly notes the 90-mile distance to Cuba. It’s a must-visit photo stop—and perhaps the closest you’ll get to Cuba without actually going there.
In the end, while you may not catch a glimpse of Cuba, Key West offers more than enough charm, history, and ocean views to make you forget all about it.

Well, technically, the tiny island called Ballast Key is the true southernmost post, but since nobody can take photos there (it is privately owned), the Southernmost Point serves just as well.
Southernmost Point is located near the 24 North Hotel, which takes full advantage of this fact.
What would it take to be able to see Cuba from Key West?
Some people do not take “no” for an answer, so they are looking for any way to see Cuba from Key West. Well, there is a way, but you would have to build a 5000ft (1524m) tall tower.

There are technical problems with that, regardless of how much money you throw at the problem. Currently, the tallest manmade structure in the world is the 828-meter-tall (2,717 ft) Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai.
How Far Is Cuba From Florida?
As the bird flies, Cuba, including its capital Havana, is about 90 miles from Key West. It sounds close enough, especially since Havana is closer to Key West than Key West is to Miami.

And that is another question people like to ask: if you cannot see Cuba from Key West, can you see Cuba from anywhere else in the US? It sounds self-explanatory, but sometimes it has to be said: if you cannot see Cuba from the southernmost spot in the US, you certainly cannot see it from anywhere else.
