Google Expands “Results About You” Tool to Include Government IDs
Google is expanding its “Results about you” tool to let users find and request removal of Search results containing sensitive government ID information, including passports, driver’s licenses, and Social Security numbers. This builds on the tool’s existing coverage of phone numbers and home addresses.
What’s New
-
Users can now add government ID numbers to their monitoring profile.
-
Google will automatically scan Search results and notify users if matches appear.
-
More than 10 million people already use the tool to track how personal information appears in Search.
The tool is accessible via the Google app (tap your account photo → “Results about you”) or at New users go through a setup process to add personal information and government IDs; existing users can add ID numbers directly.
Google ensures submitted ID numbers are protected through its standard security protocols and encryption. The update is rolling out in the U.S. first, with plans to expand to other regions.
Why This Matters
Exposure of government IDs in Search is a higher-risk problem than leaked phone numbers or addresses. Unlike a phone number, a Social Security or passport number is permanent and tied to your identity, making removal from search results urgent.
Sites that publish public records, legal documents, or aggregated data may see increased removal requests as more people use the tool.
Important Consideration
Removing information from Google Search does not delete it from the web. Users still need to contact the original sites hosting the data to request full removal.
