Google Maps Introduces AI Conversational Search via Ask Maps

Google Maps is introducing Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational feature designed to help users discover and interact with local places using natural language queries. The feature is currently rolling out on Android and iOS in the U.S. and India, with a desktop version coming soon.

What Ask Maps Does

Ask Maps allows users to ask complex location-based questions, such as:

  • “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?”

  • “My phone is dying, where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?”

Instead of showing standard blue links or pins, Ask Maps combines reviews, business details, and a visual map into a single AI-generated response. It draws from Google’s database of over 300 million places and 500 million contributor reviews to generate answers.

Personalization & Actions

Ask Maps tailors recommendations based on your Google Maps activity, like saved places or past searches. For instance, if you often search for vegan restaurants, it will prioritize those options for group dinner suggestions.

Once a recommendation is given, users can:

  • Book reservations

  • Save places to lists

  • Share locations with friends

  • Start navigation with a few taps

Monetization Questions

Google has not announced ads in Ask Maps. Executives declined to comment on whether businesses might pay to appear in Ask Maps results. Currently, Google Maps already runs ads via promoted pins and search ads, and the future monetization of Ask Maps could influence which businesses are recommended.

Immersive Navigation

Alongside Ask Maps, Google is launching Immersive Navigation, which adds:

  • 3D views of buildings and terrain

  • Natural voice guidance

  • Alternate route comparisons (e.g., tolls vs. traffic delays)

  • Street View previews and parking suggestions

  • Highlighted building entrances

Immersive Navigation is initially rolling out in the U.S. on iOS and Android, with expanding support for CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in.

Why This Matters

Ask Maps represents the next step in integrating Gemini AI into Google Maps, moving from navigation assistance into local discovery and trip planning. How the system ranks and selects businesses for recommendations, as well as potential future monetization, could significantly impact how users discover local businesses.

Availability:

  • Ask Maps: Android & iOS in the U.S. and India now, desktop coming soon

  • Immersive Navigation: Rolling out in the U.S., expanding to more devices in the coming months

This launch continues Google’s trend of enhancing Maps with AI to make exploration, planning, and navigation more intuitive and personalized.
