How to Retrieve Deleted Text Messages on iPhone: Complete Guide

Factors That Affect the Recovery of Deleted Messages on iPhone

Before trying to recover deleted text messages on an iPhone, it’s important to understand the factors that can influence your chances of success. Whether it’s an important business message or a personal conversation, knowing these factors helps you choose the most effective recovery method and increases the likelihood of retrieving the messages.

  • :hourglass_done: Time Since Deletion: The iPhone stores deleted messages in a ‘Recently Deleted’ folder for 30 days. If the recovery attempt is made within this window, the process is simple and more likely to succeed.

  • :computer_disk: Availability of Backup: A recent backup enhances the chances of successful recovery. Recovery can be guaranteed if the backup was made before the deletion and the messages were included.

  • :cloud: iCloud Message Synchronization: The settings for iCloud message synchronization play a pivotal role. If message syncing with iCloud is enabled, deleted messages are not stored in iCloud backups. This synchronization setting affects whether you can rely on iCloud backups for recovery.

  • :cross_mark: Message Deletion Process: The method by which messages are deleted affects their recoverability. On deletion, the iPhone does not immediately remove the messages; instead, it marks them as trash data in its database. These messages remain recoverable for data recovery software until the system runs the garbage collection process. If this cleanup has occurred, recovering messages without a backup becomes impossible.

  • :timer_clock: Automatic deletion of messages: You may have noticed that old messages have disappeared, and this may be due to the automatic deletion of messages in the Messages app settings. Therefore, we recommend setting the ‘Keep messages’ option to ‘Forever’ so that you don’t lose any other messages.

Note: If you realize you need to recover deleted text messages and don’t have any backups, immediately turn off the Internet on your iPhone. This prevents further synchronization or data changes that could make recovery more difficult. After this, we recommend using a tool like Disk Drill to attempt recovery.

How to Recover Deleted Text Messages on iPhone

Here’s a step-by-step guide to retrieving deleted text messages on your iPhone using different methods. Each method is explained clearly so you can choose the one that fits your situation best.

1. Retrieve Deleted Text Messages from Recently Deleted

If you deleted messages recently, they might still be recoverable. iPhone temporarily stores deleted messages in the Recently Deleted folder for up to 30 days.

To recover messages from this folder:

  1. Start by launching the Messages app on your iPhone.

  2. Navigate to the ‘Edit’ option at the top left corner of the screen, then select ‘Show Recently Deleted.’

  3. Browse through the list of messages in the ‘Recently Deleted’ folder. Here, you’ll see the messages available for recovery, along with the remaining days before they are permanently deleted.

  4. Tap on ‘Recover’ at the bottom right of the screen, then select the specific messages you wish to restore, or choose ‘Recover All’ to restore all listed messages.

By following the steps above, you can quickly restore recently deleted messages on your iPhone from the last 30 days directly on your device, without needing backups or additional software. This method is simple, effective, and usually the first step in any message recovery process.

2. Retrieve Deleted Text Messages from iCloud Backup

If your messages aren’t syncing to iCloud but are included in an iCloud backup, you can recover them through that backup. Keep in mind that this method restores your entire iPhone, replacing your current data with the contents of the selected backup.

Note: Messages are only included in an iCloud backup if Messages in iCloud is turned off. If message syncing is enabled, your texts are stored in iCloud separately and not part of the backup to save space.

Here’s how to recover deleted messages using an iCloud backup:

  1. Before you start, check if there’s a relevant iCloud backup that contains the deleted messages. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Storage > Backups. Tap on your device to see the date and size of the latest backups.

  2. Since this process will overwrite your current data, it’s a good idea to back up your iPhone manually to iCloud or to your computer using iTunes/Finder before proceeding. This way, you can restore your current state if necessary.

  3. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This will reset your iPhone to factory settings.

  4. After your iPhone restarts, you’ll be prompted to set it up. Choose the Restore from iCloud Backup option and sign in with your Apple ID. Select the backup that was created before the messages were deleted.

  5. The restoration process may take some time, depending on the size of the backup and your internet connection. Once it’s done, your iPhone will restart, and you should find your deleted messages restored along with the rest of your data from that backup.

This iCloud backup method is effective, but it can cause data loss for any files or changes added to your iPhone after the backup was created. Fortunately, data that syncs with iCloud—like photos, contacts, and notes—will remain up-to-date even after the restore.

3. Recover Permanently Deleted Text Messages Using iTunes/Finder Backup

If you back up your iPhone via iTunes (on Windows or older macOS) or Finder (on macOS Catalina and later), you can restore deleted messages from a backup made before the messages were deleted.

Keep in mind: restoring from iTunes/Finder restores your entire device to the state of that backup. If you only want to recover specific messages without affecting other data, a tool like Disk Drill can help. It allows you to locate old text messages in your backup and restore them without resetting your entire iPhone, which we’ll cover next.

  1. Open iTunes (on Windows or older macOS versions) or Finder (on macOS Catalina and later). Connect your iPhone to your computer and select your device when it appears. Under the Backups section, look for the date of your latest backup.

  2. As with iCloud, restoring from an iTunes or Finder backup will overwrite your iPhone’s current data. To protect any recent data, consider creating a new backup before proceeding.

  3. In iTunes or Finder, click Restore Backup and choose the backup that was made before the messages were deleted. Click Restore and wait for the process to complete. Your iPhone will restart with the data from the selected backup.

  4. After the restore process is complete, open the Messages app to see if the deleted texts have been recovered.

An iTunes or Finder backup can recover deleted messages, especially if your iPhone’s Messages syncing is turned off and you regularly back up to your computer. Like the iCloud method, though, this approach can overwrite recent data that wasn’t included in the backup.

4. Use Disk Drill to Recover Deleted Text Messages on iPhone

Disk Drill provides a powerful way to retrieve deleted text messages without relying on a backup. It scans your iPhone for remnants of deleted data and can successfully recover messages if:

  • Only a short time has passed since deletion

  • The system’s garbage collection (which permanently removes deleted files) hasn’t occurred yet

If garbage collection has already run, recovery is only possible through backup copies.

Disk Drill can also scan iTunes/Finder backups, allowing you to restore individual messages without resetting your entire iPhone.

Attention: When scanning your iPhone, Disk Drill requires twice as much free space on your Mac as the iPhone uses. This is because it creates a full Finder backup of your iPhone and scans it for deleted and lost data.

  1. Download Disk Drill and install it on your Mac.

  2. Use a USB cable to connect your iPhone to your Mac. If you’re restoring from an iTunes/Finder backup, you can skip this step.

  3. In Disk Drill, navigate to the iPhone & iPad section and select your device or the relevant iTunes/Finder backup. Click on Search for lost data.

  4. When prompted, enter the unlock password on your iPhone to allow Disk Drill to scan your device. If your backup is encrypted by the Finder/iTunes settings, Disk Drill will ask for its password in a separate pop-up window.

  5. After the scan completes, you’ll see a list of recoverable data. Select Messages from the list. You can also recover messages from various messengers such as WhatsApp, Kik, Viber and others.

  6. Review this list to see deleted iPhone messages that you need to recover.

  7. Choose the messages you want to recover and click the Recover button.

  8. Specify a location on your Mac where the recovered messages should be saved.

Disk Drill offers a flexible way to recover deleted messages directly from your iPhone or backups without restoring the entire device. This is especially useful if you want to retrieve old messages from a backup without altering other content on your iPhone.

If Disk Drill doesn’t work, the next option is to contact your cellular provider.

5. Contact Your Cellular Provider to Recover Messages

If all other methods fail, your cellular provider may be able to help. Some providers retain records of text messages for a limited time, depending on their data retention policies and local regulations. Typically, they store only metadata—such as date, time, and phone numbers—not the message content itself.

This approach is mostly relevant for legal or billing purposes. Providers often require legal documentation (e.g., a court order or subpoena) to release information. It can also be time-consuming and may involve fees.

If you pursue this method, be ready to provide:

  • Phone number(s) involved

  • Approximate date and time of the messages

Keep in mind: success is not guaranteed, and this method is usually considered a last resort.

Is It Possible to Recover Messages from a Broken iPhone?

Recovery from a broken iPhone depends on the damage:

  • Repairable device: If the issue is fixable (e.g., broken screen), restore functionality to access messages normally.

  • iCloud-synced messages: Even if the iPhone is irreparable, messages synced to iCloud can be accessed from another device.

  • Damaged storage: If the storage itself is damaged and messages aren’t synced, a professional data recovery service may be required. This option can be costly but may allow retrieval of messages when all other methods fail.
