Apple has given iPhone buyers a very different choice in 2026.
Alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. While both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo use Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, they are designed for very different types of users.
The iPhone 18 Pro keeps the familiar smartphone design while improving the camera system, performance and battery life. The iPhone Duo takes a completely different approach, combining a compact phone with a much larger foldable display.
So, what exactly separates the two?
The Biggest Difference Is the Design
The easiest way to distinguish the iPhone 18 Pro from the iPhone Duo is the form factor.
The iPhone 18 Pro is a traditional smartphone with a single display, while the iPhone Duo can be folded closed and opened to reveal a much larger screen.
When closed, the Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display. Opening it reveals a 7.6-inch folding OLED display, which Apple says is 50% larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That gives the Duo an experience that sits somewhere between a conventional smartphone and a small tablet.
The iPhone 18 Pro, meanwhile, is aimed at people who prefer the familiar iPhone design without a folding mechanism.
iPhone Duo Offers the Bigger Display
Display size is where the Duo has a clear advantage.
The iPhone 18 Pro comes with a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max increases that to 6.9 inches. The Duo’s inner display goes considerably further at 7.6 inches.
Both of the Duo’s displays support ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, Always-On display technology and up to 3,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness.
The larger folding display could be particularly useful for watching videos, gaming, reading documents and multitasking.
Apple has also redesigned iOS for the Duo, allowing users to take advantage of features such as Split View when the phone is opened.
The iPhone 18 Pro Has the Better Camera System
If photography and video are a priority, the iPhone 18 Pro has the advantage.
Apple has equipped the 18 Pro with a new 48MP Fusion Main camera featuring variable aperture. The system also includes a dedicated telephoto camera, giving the Pro model more flexibility for zoom photography.
The Duo also has a dual-camera system with 48MP main and ultrawide cameras, but it does not have the dedicated telephoto camera found on the 18 Pro. It also misses some of the Pro-exclusive photography and video features.
For people who regularly shoot professional-looking photos and videos, the 18 Pro is therefore the more attractive option.
Both Phones Use the A20 Pro Chip
Performance is one area where the two devices are much closer.
Both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo use Apple’s A20 Pro chip, giving the foldable access to the same generation of flagship silicon as the Pro model.
The Duo also uses an advanced thermal-management system with a custom vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture.
This means buyers are not necessarily sacrificing flagship performance simply because they choose the foldable design.
The difference is more about how that performance is used.
The 18 Pro is built around the traditional smartphone experience, while the Duo uses its larger display to support multitasking and more tablet-like activities.
Face ID vs Touch ID
Apple has also made an interesting choice with security.
The iPhone 18 Pro continues to use Face ID, while the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID integrated into the side button.
This is one of the clearest examples of how the foldable design has required Apple to rethink some familiar iPhone features.
For users who have become accustomed to Face ID, Touch ID could take some adjustment.
The Duo Is More Expensive
Price is another major difference.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB, while the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. That’s an $800 difference before moving into higher storage configurations.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299.
The price difference reflects the complexity of the Duo’s folding display, hinge system and overall design.
For many buyers, the question will therefore be whether the larger foldable screen is worth paying significantly more for.
Battery Life Is Competitive
Apple has also focused heavily on battery life across both models.
The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours. The Duo’s quoted battery figures vary depending on which display is being used, with up to 44 hours on its outer display and up to 31 hours on its folding display.
Actual battery life will naturally depend on how the devices are used.
The Duo’s larger inner screen could consume more power during demanding tasks, but Apple’s dual-battery design is intended to compensate for the additional display area.
The Duo Is Built for Multitasking
This is where the iPhone Duo could become genuinely different from a normal iPhone.
When unfolded, users can take advantage of a larger workspace for multitasking. iOS 27 introduces features designed specifically for the foldable form factor, including Split View and other ways to run apps side by side.
The Duo will also support the Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year, giving users another way to take notes, sketch and interact with documents.
That could make the Duo appealing to students, professionals and people who frequently use their phones for productivity.
The iPhone 18 Pro remains more focused on the traditional smartphone experience.

Which iPhone Should You Choose?
The answer depends largely on what you want from your phone.
The iPhone 18 Pro makes more sense for users who want Apple’s latest traditional iPhone, a stronger camera system, Face ID and a significantly lower starting price.
The iPhone Duo is aimed at people who want something completely different. Its main attraction is the ability to carry a relatively compact phone that opens into a 7.6-inch display.
For photography, the 18 Pro is the stronger choice.
For multitasking and having a much larger screen in your pocket, the Duo has the advantage.
And for anyone who simply wants to experience Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the Duo is the only option.
When Can You Buy Them?
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are available for pre-order from September 12, with availability beginning September 18.
The iPhone Duo arrives later. Apple says pre-orders will begin on October 16, with availability starting October 23, 2026.
That gives customers some time to decide whether they want Apple’s latest conventional Pro phone or its first attempt at a foldable iPhone.
