iPhone Running Slow? How to Fix It

iPhone Running Slow? How to Fix It

We have categorized our troubleshooting methods by the common issues that lead to iPhone performance slowdown. Within each category, we provide step-by-step instructions on how to fix an iPhone running slow.

1. Network Lag

Sometimes, your iPhone’s slowness isn’t caused by the device itself but by your internet connection. This is often noticeable if browsing the web or using internet-dependent apps feels sluggish, while offline apps run smoothly.

Here’s how to check if poor network connectivity is the cause and optimize your settings:

  • Verify your network connection: Ensure you’re connected to a stable network, preferably Wi-Fi. You can also try switching to another network, like a hotspot or mobile data, to see if performance improves.

  • Reset your network connection: If problems persist, try resetting your Wi-Fi connection or network settings.

If your iPhone remains slow after ruling out network issues, move on to the next step.

2. App Crashes and Freezes

Closing unresponsive apps and monitoring background processes helps free up system resources and improves responsiveness. While newer iPhones, like the iPhone 15 series, encounter app crashes less often, older devices are more prone to freezes.

Tips to manage unresponsive apps and reduce crashes:

  • Close apps after use: Avoid clogging memory by closing apps you no longer need.

    • For devices without a Home button: Swipe up from the bottom to the middle of the screen to view background apps, then swipe up on the ones you want to close.

    • For devices with a Home button: Double-click the Home button to see recent apps, then swipe up to close unused apps.

  • Check for app updates: Some performance issues are due to outdated apps. Visit the App Store to ensure your apps are up to date.

  • Reinstall problematic apps: Uninstalling and reinstalling an app can fix persistent bugs. Note that this deletes the app’s data and cache.

3. Full Storage

A common reason an iPhone runs slowly is full storage. iPhones need sufficient free space to operate apps and system processes efficiently. Running low on storage for a long time can significantly degrade performance.

To check your storage:

  • Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.

  • Here, you can see how much free space is left and which files or apps are using the most storage.

Freeing up space by deleting unused apps, clearing caches, or optimizing media storage can noticeably improve your device’s speed.

Once you’ve confirmed that your iPhone storage is low, you can follow these best practices to free up space:

Clear your app cache

An app cache is temporary data that helps an app load faster each time you open it. Over time, as you use more apps, this data accumulates and can fill up your storage, slowing down your device.

iPhones don’t have a universal cache management system, so you’ll need to clear cache through individual app settings. Keep in mind that not all apps offer this feature, but if available, it’s usually found within the app’s settings.

For this example, we’ll use the Facebook app to demonstrate clearing app cache. Go to Facebook Menu > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Browser, then tap the Clear button next to Your browsing data to remove the app’s cache.

Clear browser cache

Browser cache can also take up significant storage on your iPhone. If you use multiple browsers, you’ll need to clear each one individually. Here’s how to clear Safari’s cache:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to Safari.

  2. In Safari settings, tap Clear History and Website Data.

  3. When the pop-up appears, tap Clear History to confirm.

This helps free up storage and can improve overall device performance.

Delete unnecessary apps / Offload rarely used apps

Apple lets you either delete or offload apps to optimize storage and improve performance.

  • Delete an app: Removes the app and all its data, including saved preferences, passwords, and settings. Use this option for apps you no longer need.

  • Offload an app: Frees up the storage the app occupies but keeps its data intact. This allows you to reinstall the app later and continue where you left off.

Choosing between deleting and offloading helps manage your storage efficiently while maintaining important app data.

You can find these options under Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Under iPhone Storage, select the app you want and tap Delete App or Offload App.

Delete old messages

While not occupying significant storage, your phone might still feel the weight of piled-up SMS texts and iMessages over time. To avoid this, delete your old messages by doing the following:

  1. Open the Messages app.

  2. Tap Edit in the upper-left corner of the screen, then tap Select Messages.

  3. Tap the circles next to the conversations you want to delete to select them.

  4. Next, tap “Delete” in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

  5. Confirm that you want to delete the selected conversations by tapping “Delete” again.

Upload your photos to iCloud

If you have an iCloud subscription, you can enable Optimize iPhone Storage to free up device storage. This feature uploads your full-resolution photos and videos from the Photos app to iCloud while keeping smaller, space-saving versions on your iPhone.

This reduces the storage used by your media files while still allowing you to access all your photos and videos directly on your device.

Enable Optimize iPhone Storage
Go to Settings > Photos and select Optimize iPhone Storage to free up space while keeping access to your photos and videos.

Clean up the Files folder
If you frequently download files, check the Files app to declutter. By default, the Downloads folder stores all downloaded content. You can also review other folders in the Files app and delete any unnecessary files to free up storage.

4. Battery Health

Apps and background processes rely on battery power to run efficiently. If your battery health declines, these processes may be hindered, slowing down your iPhone. Battery health naturally decreases over time, but certain habits can help slow this deterioration.

Tips to maintain battery health:

  • Regularly check your battery health: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to view your battery percentage and monitor your charging habits.

  • Lower screen brightness: Reduce energy consumption under Settings > Display & Brightness.

  • Disable Low Power Mode when appropriate: Low Power Mode conserves battery by limiting animations and background tasks, but it may affect performance. If your battery icon is yellow, it’s enabled. Turn it off via Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.

5. Overheating

Overheating can damage your iPhone, reduce battery health, drain charge, and slow performance. Common causes include heavy usage, resource-intensive apps, or exposure to direct sunlight.

Ways to reduce overheating:

  • Avoid direct sunlight.

  • Remove the phone case to let heat escape.

  • Close apps when not in use.

  • Turn off unused features like GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirDrop, and other functions.

  • Disable background app refresh: Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

These practices help protect your iPhone from heat-related performance issues and maintain smooth operation.

Remember that your iPhone is also sensitive to extremely cold temperatures, so always keep it within an optimal range to prevent damage.

6. Screen Responsiveness

Slow iPhone performance can sometimes be related to screen responsiveness. Dirt, oil, or physical damage may affect touch functionality. Here are tips to maintain a responsive screen:

  • Monitor your screen for any physical damage.

  • Remove or replace your screen protector if responsiveness decreases after applying one.

  • Avoid touching the screen with dirty hands.

  • Regularly clean the screen with a microfiber cloth.

  • Prevent moisture buildup on the screen and in any ports or openings.

Additional Ways to Fix iPhone Running Slow

If the previous methods haven’t solved the issue, try these two simple fixes: restarting your iPhone and updating iOS.

Try Restarting iPhone

Restarting clears memory, closes background apps, and resolves minor software glitches, which can improve performance.

  • For newer iPhones without a Home button: Press and hold either volume button together with the side button until the power-off slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off the device.

  • For older iPhones with a Home button: Press and hold the side button until the slider appears, then drag it to turn off the phone.

  • For all models: Go to Settings > General > Shut Down and drag the slider.

After the device is off, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears to turn it back on.

Update iOS

Outdated software can slow down your iPhone. Keeping iOS updated ensures your device receives performance improvements and bug fixes included in the latest updates.

Here’s how to check for and install iOS updates:

Go to Settings > General > Software Update. This allows your device to check for available updates.

  1. If there are any pending updates, follow the onscreen instructions for the installation. Make sure you have sufficient battery charge and are connected to the internet for the process to successfully finish.

You can also enable Automatic Updates by going to Settings > General > Software Update and turning on the Automatic Updates option. This ensures your iPhone stays up to date without manual checks.
