Nearly 20 Years Later, Nirvanna the Band the Show Stars Reveal Iconic Wii Shop Song Only Took 5 Hours to Write, Perform, and Edit

Here’s the backstory on the iconic Wii Shop Update Day song from Nirvanna the Band the Show:

  • Creators: Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol

  • How it came together: The entire sketch—including writing, editing, and uploading—was completed in about five hours. Johnson said it “wasn’t even a full day’s work from start to finish.”

  • Inspiration: The song improvised to the Wii Shop Channel music, with references to games like ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron. Johnson mentioned his limited exposure to Sega Genesis titles due to regional restrictions from his parents.

  • Performance: McCarrol had to improvise the lyrics on the spot while holding up scribbled notes, which explains the slightly frantic delivery in the video.

The sketch was part of their web series (2007–2010), which later became a TV adaptation in 2017 on Viceland. The series ran for two seasons, and a movie premiered last year with a limited release in February 2026.

It’s a neat little piece of Nintendo and indie comedy history—short, chaotic, and perfectly timed to the Wii era.
