Organize iPhone Photos Easily on iOS 17
iPhones are well known for their cameras, and it’s easy to get carried away pressing the capture button. Uncontrolled photo-taking can lead to a cluttered library, making it harder to find specific pictures or videos.
Fortunately, the Photos app provides several tools to organize and manage your photos efficiently. Here’s a guide on how to keep your iPhone photo library tidy.
1. Discover the Abilities of the Photos App
When you open the Photos app, the Library tab appears by default, showing your photos in a grid format. You can filter photos to view all of them or organize them by shooting date—by years, months, or days.
Besides the Library tab, you can organize photos using Albums, Folders, and the For You tab.
Albums
Albums let you group photos and videos with similar dates or themes. For example, you can create an album for a museum trip or a date night in Croatia.
To create an album in Photos:
-
Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
-
Tap the Albums tab at the bottom of the screen.
-
Tap the + icon in the top-left corner.
-
Select New Album from the menu.
This allows you to keep your photo library organized and easy to navigate.
-
Enter an album name and tap Save.
-
Once your new album is created, you will be prompted to select photos to add to the new album.
-
Browse through your photo library and tap on the photos you want to include in the album.
-
Once you’re done, tap Add in the top right corner of the screen.
That’s it! Your new album will now appear in the Albums section with the photos you selected. To add more photos later, open the album and tap the + icon, or use the Add to Album option when selecting photos from your library.
Folders
If you have multiple albums with a similar theme, you can group them into folders for better organization. Note that folders cannot store individual photos or videos directly—they can only contain albums.
To create a folder in the Photos app:
-
Navigate to Albums and tap + (the plus icon) in the top left.
-
Select New Folder from the pop-up menu.
-
Enter your preferred folder name and tap Save.
To add an album to your new folder:
-
Tap on your folder to open it.
-
Then, tap Edit on the top right.
-
Tap the + icon in the top left corner of the screen.
-
Select New Album from the dropdown, then tap Done.
Note that there isn’t a direct way to move an existing album into a folder. To organize it, you need to create a new album inside your desired folder and then transfer the photos from the original album into the new one.
For You
In addition to creating albums and folders, the Photos app uses intelligent algorithms to automatically organize photos by date, location, and recognized faces or objects.
The For You tab highlights this automatic sorting. Here, you can access Memories, which are curated collections of photos and videos from specific events, automatically generated by the app.
2. Locate & Organize Pictures on iPhone
Finding specific images is simple thanks to the Photos app’s powerful search function. You can use keywords related to your photos, as the app can recognize content within images much like a web search engine.
To search for images in Photos:
-
Go to the Search tab
-
Tap the search bar at the top.
-
Type relevant keywords.
Tip: To refine your searches, type additional keywords into the search bar. You can also use quotation marks to search for exact phrases.
Search Categories
As you type, Photos suggests results based on your library and commonly searched items. Results may appear in the following categories:
-
Moments: Uses time and location data to highlight specific events, like birthday celebrations.
-
People & Pets: If you name people or pets in the People album, you can search for them directly.
-
Places: Search for a location to view photos taken there. The Places section also lets you browse your library on a map.
-
Categories: Other photos are grouped by similarities based on keywords you enter.
Setting Up the People Album
The People album allows you to search by name, including pets if detected. While the album is automatically generated, you can customize it to ensure each face is accurately tagged.
To set up or edit the People album:
-
In the People & Pets album, tap on the face of the person or pet that you want to name.
-
At the top, choose Add Name.
-
Enter the name and tap Next.
-
Tap Done.
If you want to add a new person or pet to your People & Pets album, do these:
-
Tap the photo of the pet or person in your library.
-
Press the “i” icon (Info button) at the bottom of the screen.
-
Tap the face with a question mark.
-
Choose Name This Person (or Name This Pet, if an animal is selected).
-
Enter the name and tap Next > Done.
3. Declutter iPhone Photo Library
Removing a single photo from your library is simple: open the photo, tap the Trash icon, and confirm by selecting Delete Photo. However, there are additional ways to declutter your iPhone, including bulk deletion, removing duplicates, and emptying the Recently Deleted folder.
Delete Photos in Bulk
To delete multiple photos at once:
-
Open the Photos app and go to the Library tab.
-
Tap All Photos.
-
Tap Select and choose the pictures and videos you want to remove.
- You can also slide your finger across multiple photos to select them quickly.
-
Tap the Trash icon and confirm the deletion.
If you’re using iCloud Photos, deleting a photo or video on one device will remove it from all other devices signed in to the same iCloud account. In shared libraries, if another user deletes a photo, it will also disappear from your library.
Merge Duplicates
Duplicate photos can appear for various reasons, such as multiple imports (e.g., from Messenger), syncing across devices, or automatic downloads. These duplicates are automatically collected in the Duplicates album.
Here’s how you can easily declutter them:
-
In Photos, go to Albums.
-
Scroll down to the Utilities section, and tap on the Duplicates album.
-
Tap Merge and confirm the action.
iPhone will keep the best-quality photo and merge with it other relevant information found from the duplicates. Then, all other images go to the Recently Deleted folder.
Recently Deleted
If you accidentally deleted a photo, you can easily retrieve it from the Recently Deleted folder.
-
In Photos, go to Albums.
-
Under Utilities, tap Recently Deleted.
-
For iPhone 13/14/15 models, unlock your Recently Deleted album using Face ID.
-
Select your photos and tap Recover.
-
Confirm the recovery.
Photos that are deleted remain in the Recently Deleted folder for 30 days before being permanently removed. If you want to delete them immediately, follow the steps above and tap Delete instead of Recover.
4. Incorporate iCloud to Manage Photos on iPhone
To access your photos and videos across multiple devices, you can enable iCloud Photos. This uploads your entire library to iCloud, keeping it synced and backed up.
-
On your iPhone, open Settings.
-
Tap your name and select iCloud.
-
Tap Photos and turn on Sync this Phone.
iCloud Photos functions much like your regular photo library. You can edit, organize, and save photos just as you would in the Photos app, but any changes you make are instantly reflected across all your Apple devices.
Shared Photo Library
iCloud also allows you to create a Shared Photo Library, where you and other members can view and manage content together. Any photos or videos you add are moved from your personal library to the shared library, making collaboration seamless.
To create one, iCloud Photos must be turned on. Here’s how:
-
Open Settings and tap your name.
-
Tap iCloud > Photos.
-
Tap Shared Library and follow the on-screen setup instructions.
-
Once done, share a join invite either using a web link or via Messages.
To join a Shared Photo Library, tap the invite link, select Get Started, and follow the on-screen setup instructions.
Photos from the shared library appear alongside your personal photos, but you can switch modes to organize them by ownership and access:
-
Open Photos and go to the Library tab.
-
Tap the More button (three dots) at the top right.
-
Choose one of the following modes:
-
Both Libraries
-
Personal Library
-
Shared Libraryy
-
Storage Optimization
When iCloud Photos is enabled, Optimize iPhone Storage is automatically turned on. This feature stores full-resolution originals in iCloud while keeping smaller, device-friendly versions on your iPhone.
To turn Optimize iPhone Storage on or off:
-
Go to Settings.
-
Tap your name and select iCloud.
-
Scroll down and tap Photos.
-
Choose between:
-
Optimize iPhone Storage (enabled by default)
-
Download and Keep Originals (disables Optimize iPhone Storage)
-
This helps manage storage while keeping your photos accessible across all devices.
5. Consider Alternative Solutions for Photo Organization
If the Photos app feels cumbersome or you prefer another solution for syncing and backup, several alternatives can help. However, the default app with iCloud is still the most seamless option due to its deep integration with iOS.
Google Photos
Google Photos is a popular alternative that offers 15GB of free storage for high-quality photos and videos, compared to iCloud’s 5GB. This makes it ideal for large libraries.
-
Pros: More free storage, cross-platform access.
-
Cons: Security and privacy are different from iCloud, and automatic backups can be limited by OS compatibility.
Amazon Photos
Amazon Photos allows storage in original quality. Free users get 5GB, while Amazon Prime subscribers get unlimited photo storage.
-
Pros: Maintains original image quality, supports slideshows, private sharing groups, Alexa integration, and photo printing in the US.
-
Cons: Free tier is limited in storage.
CleanMy®Phone
CleanMy®Phone is an AI-powered app that helps sort and organize iPhone photos automatically.
-
Pros: AI-assisted duplicate removal, customizable cleaning sessions, suitable for large libraries.
-
Cons: Third-party app—less integrated than the native Photos app.
Slidebox
Slidebox makes managing, deleting, and sorting photos easier using swipe gestures.
-
Features:
-
Delete photos by swiping up
-
Create albums and perform bulk deletions
-
One-tap sorting
-
Syncs directly with the Photos app, so changes reflect in iCloud
-
-
Pros: Intuitive interface, fast photo management.
-
Cons: Requires manual setup and interaction.
These alternatives can help manage large photo libraries, organize content efficiently, and supplement iCloud if you need extra storage or different organizational tools.
