These U.S. States Plan to Offer iPhone’s Driver’s License Feature

In select U.S. states, users can add their driver’s license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch, allowing them to present digital proof of identity or age in supported situations.

Once added, the digital ID can be used at participating TSA checkpoints at certain airports, select businesses, and within compatible apps where identity verification is required. The feature is designed to let users securely present their ID without needing a physical card in those specific supported locations.

The digital ID feature in the Apple Wallet lets users in participating U.S. states store their driver’s license or state ID on iPhone and Apple Watch for secure identity or age verification in supported locations.

Availability

The feature is currently supported in 13 U.S. states plus Puerto Rico, including:

  • Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio

  • Hawaii, California, Iowa, New Mexico

  • Montana, North Dakota, West Virginia, Illinois

  • Plus Puerto Rico

It is also planned for future rollout in additional states such as Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Utah, Arkansas, and Virginia, though no release dates have been announced.

How to set it up

Users can add an ID by opening the Wallet app, tapping the “+” button, selecting Driver’s License or State ID, and following the verification steps.

Where it works

Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in 250+ U.S. airports for domestic travel, including major hubs like:

  • Los Angeles International Airport

  • San Francisco International Airport

  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport

  • Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport

  • Denver International Airport

However, Apple Wallet IDs are still limited in scope—they are not accepted for all legal identification purposes, so carrying a physical ID is still required.

Digital passport option

For users in states that don’t support Wallet IDs, Apple also allows creation of a Digital ID using a U.S. passport (on iOS 26.1 or later). This can be used at participating TSA checkpoints for domestic identity verification, but it does not replace a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel.
