1. Visit Hopewell Culture National Historical Park
There’s nothing like nature to clear your mind—and Hopewell Culture National Historical Park delivers just that. With scenic trails for hiking and walking, it’s a perfect spot to stay active over the weekend.
While exploring the Earthworks and mounds, I learned that these structures were built by Native Americans around 2,000 years ago. The park features 23 mounds on 13 acres, making it a fascinating historical destination. Rangers provide detailed tours, sharing insights into the artifacts and the people who built them.
The park also offers free programs for kids and adults, perfect for discovering more about its history and natural beauty. And if you simply want to relax, you can sit by the Scioto River and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Enjoy Delicious Food at Fire and Stone Pizzeria
For me, weekends are all about great food, and Chillicothe has plenty of excellent dining spots. One place that truly stood out during my visit was Fire and Stone Pizzeria.
As someone who loves trying local flavors, I had to give this pizzeria a try—and it completely won me over. Naturally, their menu features a variety of pizzas, but I was pleasantly surprised to find fresh salads and sandwiches as well. A hearty pizza paired with a salad was enough to fuel me for a full day of exploring Chillicothe.
While the menu isn’t huge, everything they prepare is worth the trip. They even offer some original pizzas unique to the area, which gives you a taste of local flavors you won’t find elsewhere.

Go to a trip down memory lane at Adena Mansion and Gardens
Adena Mansion and Gardens will make you feel like royalty even for a day. I know I did. This is a beautiful building surrounded by vast land that was once a Colonial mansion. This is where its historical meaning comes from.
What’s interesting about it is that it housed some of the first political figures in Ohio. So, many important and famous people have walked these grounds over the years. Among them are the Presidents James Monroe and William Henry Harrison. Even Chief Tecumseh of the Shawnee stayed there with his army.
I liked the tour given at the mansion, which now serves as a museum. I learned many things I didn’t have an idea about. And after the tour, I went on a very pleasant walk around the grounds and to the gardens.
The nature there is a sight that is worth experiencing and enjoying. Some other smaller buildings are situated on the estate, as well. So, there are many things to do in Chillicothe Ohio’s Adena Mansion and Gardens.
Its address is 847 Adena Rd, Chillicothe, OH 45601-1372.
Go shopping at Totem Supply Co
One more of the fun things to do in Chillicothe Ohio this weekend is going shopping. I’ll admit that this wasn’t the first thing that came to my mind when I came to the city. But when I stumbled upon Totem Supply Co, I had to purchase some of the products.
This is one of the most popular local places that sell high-quality and nice-looking clothes, accessories, and even jewelry. I found a piece for myself and my family as there are products both for adults and kids.
Aside from this, it has interesting mugs and other items for your kitchen and the entire home. Wait until you hear that many of them showcase the love for Ohio either through colors or design.
The prices aren’t too high, either, allowing visitors to take something with them as a memory of the adventure in this city.
The store is located at 11 W 2nd St, Chillicothe, OH 45601.

See a play at Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheater
Do you want to spice up your weekend a little with some drama? In Chillicothe Ohio, you can literally see history unravel before your eyes with dramatic effects. This is because of the famous play “Tecumseh!”.
Everyone can see it under the open sky. Through it, you’ll discover more details about the era of the Shawnee leader, who fought to protect his sacred lands. The wonderful Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheater provides this experience in an original way.
Moreover, I was impressed to see cannons, horses, and accurate battles being led before my eyes. More than 100 people are responsible for bringing this historical drama to life every year. And the fact that often all 1.800 seats of the amphitheater are full makes their effort worthwhile.
Considering all of this, the outdoor innovative play is high on my list of the most interesting things to do in Chillicothe Ohio. I warmly recommend it to everyone.
You can find the Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheater at 5968 Marietta Rd Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheater, Chillicothe, OH 45601.
Admire the Ross County Court House
If you’re an architecture fan, like me, you will enjoy seeing the Ross County Court House. It’s a historical object that dates back to the times when the city was Ohio’s first capital. Actually, some of the main decisions had to be made there by the judges. It’s still in use today but it serves as a common pleas court, handling different types of felonies.
You’ll surely find all the details of the building very interesting. I discovered words written above each door that says “sheriff”, “probate judge”, and others. History simply oozes from all the buildings in the place.
The good news is that the courthouse isn’t hard to reach. It’s located at 2 N Paint St suite b, Chillicothe, OH 45601.
Unwind at Scioto Trail State Park
I want some peace and quietness, during the weekend, as well. So, I was thrilled to discover Scioto Trail State Park. This is a wonderful place where pure nature surrounds you all the time.
It’s perfect for just relaxing for a while. You can also set up a picnic and lie under the big shades of the hickories and oaks with a book or just on your own with your thoughts. Believe me, the visit there was enough for me to restore energy and motivation to continue my work the following week.
Still, those that want to remain active, have the opportunity to hike on the numerous trails that pass by some amazing natural beauties. The lake and beach are a nice addition, as well. While diving is prohibited, you can try paddling on the calm water. You won’t make a mistake, no matter what you decide to do.
The park is located at 144 Lake Rd, Chillicothe, OH 45601-9478.

Learn something new at Ross County Historical Society
As soon as I stepped into the Ross County Historical Society, I fully understood the society’s mission which is preserving the past in the present for the future.
Open since 1896, the place is brimming with history. It goes back to the town’s origins, including the status of the state’s first capital. Then, there are pieces regarding its involvement in the Civil War and stories of World War I and more.
During my trips, I always try to set aside some time to learn something new about the place I’m visiting. And the Ross County Historical Society delivered.
Also, I particularly liked the McKell Library. It’s one of the facilities of the historical society. There, you can check out some amazingly preserved books, old photographs, and other historical artifacts that will stay with you for a long time.
You can find the historical society at the following address: 5 W 5th St 45601, Chillicothe, OH.

Stroll around the town is one more of the interesting things to do in Chillicothe Ohio
After you’ve checked all the previous places I’ve mentioned off your list, make sure you take a long stroll around the town.
Rushing from one place to the next may distract you from the beauty and simplicity of the town. While you’re doing that, look around yourself and admire the buildings. Chillicothe Ohio has one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture I’ve seen in the States.
It’s a real Midwestern gem. I stopped every couple of minutes to take a photo of a building or a house that has caught my attention.
What’s more, there are so many places you can still visit. There’s Great Seal State Park where you can participate in some horseback riding lessons, hike, mountain bike, organize a picnic, and more. Yoctangee is another marvelous park. It’s home to many beautiful birds like geese and ducks.
