Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says he has high expectations for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, suggesting it could be one of the company’s most significant new product launches in years.
According to Gurman, Apple’s entry into the foldable category is expected to focus on refining the form factor rather than rushing to market, with an emphasis on build quality, durability, and software optimization for the new design.
The device is expected to arrive alongside other major iPhone lineup changes, with Apple aiming to differentiate its foldable approach from existing competitors by integrating tighter hardware-software integration and a more polished user experience.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple’s first foldable iPhone will represent “the most significant overhaul in the iPhone’s history,” calling it a larger design shift than past major redesigns like the iPhone 4, iPhone 6, and iPhone X.
In his Power On newsletter, Gurman described the device as a fundamentally new form factor rather than a typical yearly update. The upcoming foldable is expected to open like a book, similar in concept to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, giving users a large internal display for gaming, video, and multitasking.
The software side is also expected to play a major role, with iOS 27 reportedly optimized to support the new form factor. This includes more flexible multitasking, such as side-by-side app usage and iPad-like window management features adapted for a phone-sized foldable device.
Earlier reports suggest the hardware could include a roughly 7.7-inch inner display and a 5.3-inch outer screen. While early rumors pointed to a completely crease-free design, more recent information indicates Apple is instead working to minimize the crease rather than eliminate it entirely.
Other rumored specifications include two rear cameras, a single front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID, according to Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Apple is still expected to announce the device alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, though some analysts believe it could ship later than the standard Pro models. Pricing is also expected to be premium, with estimates starting around $1,999 or higher in the U.S.
