Bungie Ensures Marathon Won’t Repeat Destiny 2’s Vaulting Controversy: “It Doesn’t Matter When You Join, You’ll Still Be Able to Play Through the Established Questlines

Bungie is positioning Marathon differently from Destiny 2 by making it an “additive experience,” meaning all story content and priority contracts are designed to be evergreen. Creative Director Julia Nardin explained that it won’t matter when players join—they’ll still be able to play through established questlines, complete achievements, and explore the world via collections and Codex entries.

Updates will be added over time based on player feedback, at a cadence Bungie can support, ensuring the narrative continues to grow without older content being vaulted. This approach should make it far easier for late-joining players to experience the full story, unlike Destiny 2, where years of lore have been relegated to the Destiny Content Vault.

The game’s core loop—scavenging an abandoned colony on Tau Ceti IV—is tied tightly to the narrative, delivered through loot like text files and audio logs. Factions issue contracts guiding exploration, and the overarching story connects back to the classic '90s Marathon trilogy, which is free on Steam.

In short, Bungie wants Marathon to stay accessible, continuously expanding, and fully playable for everyone, old or new.
