iOS 27 Rumored to Feature All-New Siri App With ‘Extensions’ Feature

In his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman outlined more details about Apple’s upcoming AI strategy, focusing on a redesigned approach to Siri across future operating systems.

According to Gurman, Apple is working on a dedicated Siri app that would arrive alongside a new “Extensions” system spanning iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. This system is expected to significantly expand Siri’s capabilities by allowing deeper integration with apps and services through modular features.

The idea behind “Extensions” is to turn Siri into a more flexible AI layer that can interact with third-party apps and system functions in a more direct, structured way—moving it closer to modern AI assistants that function as full conversational interfaces rather than simple voice command tools.

Gurman’s report suggests this broader AI overhaul is part of Apple’s next major software cycle, with iOS 27 positioned as the central release where these changes are expected to debut publicly.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s planned overhaul of Siri under iOS 27 will go far beyond a simple feature update, effectively turning Siri into a full AI assistant app similar to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude.

The rumored Siri app would support both text and voice interactions, allowing users to have full conversational exchanges with Apple’s assistant. It would also include access to past conversations, making it more like a persistent AI chat interface rather than a short-form command tool.

Apple already allows Siri to connect with ChatGPT in iOS 18 and later, but the upcoming “Extensions” system is expected to expand this concept significantly. Instead of relying on a single external integration, users would be able to connect multiple third-party AI services directly to Siri.

Gurman reports that internal iOS 27 builds include references describing Extensions as a framework where “agents from installed apps work with Siri, the Siri app and other features on your devices.” He also notes that Apple is planning a dedicated Extensions section in the App Store, effectively creating a marketplace for AI integrations.

The Siri app itself is expected to be tightly integrated into the system, potentially including a redesigned interface that may use elements like the Dynamic Island, along with systemwide entry points such as an “Ask Siri” button in Apple apps and a “Write with Siri” option above the keyboard.

There is still uncertainty about device compatibility—specifically whether the full experience will require newer hardware like an iPhone 15 Pro or later, or if it will be available across all iOS 27-supported devices.

Apple is expected to announce iOS 27 at WWDC in June, with a public release likely following in September.
