The teaser for the upcoming DC series shows Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre).
But viewers noticed a few surprising things:
-
The trailer’s color palette is mostly beige/brown, not bright green.
-
The Green Lantern suit briefly shown also looks muted and dull.
-
There’s very little superhero action in the teaser.
Because of that, some fans joked online that the suit looked worse than the one from the movie Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds.
Why It Looks So Grounded
The tone is intentional. DC Studios head James Gunn previously described the show as being inspired by True Detective.
That means the series will focus on:
-
a murder investigation in Nebraska
-
a detective-style story
-
a more realistic tone
Hal Jordan acts as a veteran mentor training John Stewart while they uncover the mystery.
The series is also co-created by Damon Lindelof, known for The Leftovers, which explains the darker, character-focused style.
Release
Lanterns is scheduled to premiere August 2026 on HBO Max as part of DC Universe Chapter One.
Bottom line:
The trailer looks less like a superhero spectacle and more like a cosmic detective story. The bright Green Lantern visuals will probably appear later when the characters fully use their rings.
