Marvel Rivals Publisher Reportedly Cuts Funding for Yakuza Co-Creator’s New Studio Just Three Months After Revealing Its First Game

It looks like Nagoshi Studio is in a tight spot. Toshihiro Nagoshi, the mind behind the Yakuza series, launched the studio in 2021 with backing from NetEase, but now that funding is reportedly being pulled. Their debut title, Gang of Dragon, had only just been revealed, featuring Don Lee in a story that very much channels the Yakuza style of brawlers and narrative-driven action.

Bloomberg reports that the studio would need roughly ¥7 billion (~$44.4 million) more to finish production. Nagoshi is trying to secure outside investment, but so far it seems there hasn’t been any luck. This mirrors other recent cutbacks by NetEase, including pausing Worlds Untold and shutting down Ouka Studio, showing a broader retrenchment in their gaming division.

If Nagoshi Studio manages to find new backers, Gang of Dragon could still see the light of day—but the situation is very uncertain at the moment. It’s a reminder that even veteran developers aren’t immune to the volatility of modern game funding.
