OpenAI Brings ChatGPT to CarPlay for Hands-Free Voice Conversations

ChatGPT has been updated with support for CarPlay, allowing drivers to interact with the AI assistant directly from their vehicle’s dashboard.

With the new integration, CarPlay users can ask ChatGPT questions, issue requests, and receive responses hands-free while on the road, extending the app’s functionality into in-car use cases. The update is designed to make it easier to access AI assistance for tasks such as information lookup, planning, and general queries without needing to pick up an iPhone.

Apple’s CarPlay platform continues to expand its support for third-party apps and services, further enhancing its role as a central interface for iPhone-based functionality in vehicles.

CarPlay has introduced new support in iOS 26.4 that allows third-party voice-based conversational apps to integrate directly into the in-car experience, though with strict safety and interface limitations.

Controlled third-party voice integration

Under the new framework, apps like ChatGPT can connect to CarPlay, but only after implementing Apple’s required voice interface design and obtaining a special entitlement from Apple.

Voice must be the primary method of interaction. Apps are not permitted to display text responses or images during use, ensuring minimal visual distraction while driving.

Standardized voice UI

Apple provides a dedicated voice control template that all compliant apps must use. This interface requires apps to display a standardized voice activity screen while in use, and allows up to four on-screen action buttons for limited controls.

To use ChatGPT in CarPlay, an iPhone must be running iOS 26.4 or later.

Safety restrictions and limitations

CarPlay has long supported third-party apps, but Apple restricts categories to reduce driver distraction. Supported app types include audio, messaging, EV charging, and navigation.

Even with ChatGPT integration, there are important limitations:

  • No control over vehicle or iPhone system functions

  • No wake word activation (users must manually open the app)

  • Voice-only responses while driving

These constraints ensure that conversational AI remains within Apple’s established safety framework for in-car use.
