The Concept
-
Netflix and Universal are reviving the classic monster universe (Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, The Mummy, etc.) as a TV series, not a film universe.
-
The show is being developed by Kevin Williamson (Scream 7 writer/director).
-
Williamson describes it as an “adult Vampire Diaries,” blending horror, drama, and supernatural elements aimed at older audiences.
-
It will feature classic Universal monsters in storylines with modern twists, giving them room to “play with” characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolf Man.
Background
-
Universal’s original monster films (1930s–1950s) were one of the earliest proto-cinematic universes, with occasional crossovers.
-
Previous attempts at reviving the Dark Universe include:
- 2017 The Mummy reboot with Tom Cruise, which flopped and canceled planned cinematic universe films.
-
Williamson’s series is a fresh take, focusing on the monsters’ stories rather than forcing a shared universe too early, which had been a problem with earlier attempts.
Current Status
-
Williamson is writing the show while finishing Scream 7.
-
No premiere date has been announced.
Outlook
-
The approach is more series-driven than film-driven, allowing each monster and story to stand on its own before potential crossovers.
-
Fans of classic Universal monsters and horror-dramas may find this a more faithful and engaging take than past cinematic universe attempts.
