Oscar Piastri: Australian GP Crash & Team Response
Incident Recap
-
On a reconnaissance lap to the grid at Albert Park, Piastri spun at Turn 4, hitting the barrier with the front-right corner of his McLaren MCL40.
-
Result: Did not start (DNS) the race; his home GP ended before it began.
-
Piastri cited cold tyres and an unexpected burst of power unit energy (~100kW) as contributing factors, while taking personal responsibility.
Team Principal Andrea Stella’s Response
- Stella praised Piastri’s mental resilience, highlighting his ability to recover and focus on future races:
“Oscar is a very tough guy mentally. He will use all this to get even more concentrated and determined, starting from China.”
- He emphasized team support in facing challenges together:
“We are a team in any situation that may involve any of our team, when it comes to the circumstances.”
Technical Explanation
-
Stella outlined the contributing factors to the crash:
-
Cold tyres – Increased wheel spin on exit.
-
Kerb usage – Piastri had used this kerb every lap in testing, but the combination with cold tyres made it tricky.
-
Power unit torque deployment – Extra torque from the new F1 2026 rules interacted with the kerb and tyre conditions, creating inconsistencies.
-
“It’s not something you would do unless it’s required in terms of how you deploy your torque. In testing, we didn’t have the combination of cold tyres and the kerb, which aggravated the inconsistencies.”
Looking Ahead
-
Stella is confident Piastri will bounce back mentally and technically for the next race in China.
-
Lando Norris finished P5, suggesting Piastri could have been in a similar midfield fight if not for the DNS.
Bottom line: McLaren views the crash as a mix of driver error, track conditions, and the unique challenges of the 2026 power unit, but trusts Piastri’s resilience and ability to recover for the rest of the season.
