Trying to Build a Skyscraper with Hand Tools”: Minecraft Devs Ditch Yearly Updates After Giant Caves and Cliffs Patch Stretched Them to the Limit

What happened as a result of Caves and Cliffs was we decided that we wanted to move to a more rapid cadence of updates"

Minecraft’s Caves and Cliffs update was such a massive undertaking that Mojang reconsidered its approach to yearly updates entirely.

Tackling monumental tasks

At GDC 2026, general manager Ryan Cooper discussed how the studio used community feedback to guide their work. He explained that for Caves and Cliffs, the sheer volume of input from players led Mojang to take on additional work to meet expectations.

A split release

Because of its scale, the update was split into two separate content drops:

  • June 2021: the first half of Caves and Cliffs

  • November 30, 2021: the second half

This experience influenced Mojang’s decision to adopt a faster, more frequent update cadence, rather than sticking to once-a-year releases, allowing them to respond more quickly to player feedback and maintain engagement. :pick::rock:
